What is website hosting?

Website hosting is the process of making a website available to view over the internet. It involves hosting a website on a server and connecting it to the World Wide Web. This is done through web hosting services that provide storage, bandwidth, and security for websites.

In order to have a website online, you need access to a web host that stores your website’s files and makes them available for users across the globe. This process allows your visitors to access your site from any part of the world at any time. Most web hosts offer different types of hosting plans depending on which type of service you are looking for. The most popular types are shared hosting, VPS (Virtual Private Server) hosting, dedicated server hosting and cloud hosting.

What to look for in a web host

Before we go through our list, let’s talk about what you should be looking for in a website host. Considering there are SO MANY options out there (all of them boasting how awesome they are), it’s probably easiest if we lay it all out for you. Here’s what you need to look for:

Connection times

Slow connection speeds can cause a lot of problems. They lead to to slow loading pages, lost customers, and lower overall satisfaction. To make sure your website is up and running quickly and efficiently, you need to look for a web hosting provider that offers high connection speeds.

One of the best ways to assess the quality of a web host’s connection times is by checking out customer reviews. These can help you get an idea about how fast sites hosted with that provider tend to load.

But that’s not your only resource, many hosts offer testing tools on their websites so you can check the speed of your own website when using their services. This will allow you to make sure that page loads are fast enough before committing to any particular hosting package.

Easy-to-reach support

It’s important to consider the level of customer service and support that comes with the package. Easy access to support teams can make all the difference when you need help or have questions about your hosting needs. A reliable service provider should have an efficient system in place where customers can easily get in touch with their technical team for assistance and advice.

Having friendly and knowledgeable staff available at any time of day or night is essential if something goes wrong with your site, as well as providing helpful tips on how to optimize the performance of your website. The best web hosting providers ensure that their customers are able to quickly connect with their technical team via telephone, email, chat or even social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook.

Pricing (without hidden fees)

While it’s not all about money, pricing is incredibly important. Not all website hosting services are created equal and the cost of hosting can vary greatly. Before making any decisions, it is important to closely examine the different fee structures offered by potential hosts and make sure that you’re comfortable with what they charge up front.

Hidden fees can add up quickly and drastically increase the total cost of ownership. It is essential to understand exactly what services are included in the base rate, as well as any additional costs for features such as SSL certificates or extra storage space.

Taking some extra time upfront to read through service agreements can save your firm from costly surprises down the road. In addition, carefully comparing multiple web hosting providers will help ensure that you get maximum value for your money when selecting a website host for your firm’s site.

Best law firm website hosts

There are a TON of great web hosts out there, but I only want to recommend ones that I’ve personally had experience with.

1. Lyrical Host

For a full-service hosting experience, we recommend Lyrical Host. We use Lyrical Host for big websites — that is those that earn income and have larger amounts of traffic. That’s because they offer full white-glove service.

Their team sets up your hosting for you, they’ll do everything from moving your site from your current host (if you have one) or simply installing WordPress for you, to ensure your domain is pointed in the right direction, and set up a domain email for you. It takes a day or two for them to get everything done, but it’s completely hands off.

It’s by far the easiest and most hands-off website hosting that we’ve experienced, and it’s PERFECT for the busy lawyer getting started. We love building websites and blogs on it.

Note that while Lyrical Host will set up your WordPress installation for you, they won’t actually design the site. You’ll need to find a great theme or hire a web designer to do something custom for you. However, if you have any issues or questions they have amazing support that will help you out.

Pros

  • Fully managed web hosting
  • Affordable for the average business
  • Perfect for beginners with no experience

Cons

  • While still affordable, this is the priciest of all our options
  • It’s a hands-off experience — which is great — but there are simple things you can’t do for yourself

2. DreamHost

If you need a budget option, DreamHost is for you. Everyone recommends Bluehost (see our opinion below), but we recommend these guys instead because they have considerably better support.

While they do have a fully-managed option, DreamHost is primarily a budget host via their shared hosting. Smaller site builds that we’re working on usually start out here and either get sold or moved to Lyrical Hosting when they’re ready for a bigger audience. It’s a great option for anyone that really needs to keep costs low in the beginning.

We’ve started sites from scratch and moved fully-developed ones over to the platform — both were easy. The one big caveat with Dreamhost’s budget option is that it does NOT include white-gloved, fully managed hosting. Because of this, you ll need to know your way around WordPress to get the most out of it (their support staff can help though).

Pros

  • Budget friendly
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Shared hosting, not managed
  • Customer service is good, but not as high-quality as you get with managed

3. Site Ground

Site Ground is the happy medium between DreamHost and Lyrical Host. It’s a bit faster than DreamHost and comes with killer customer service, but they don’t offer the full white-glove, managed hosting on their shared plans — and their managed hosting is REALLY expensive.

If you want quality shared hosting, but aren’t quite ready to go fully-managed, Site Ground is who we’d recommend. Our experience with them was great, but we ultimately switched to DreamHost on a 3 year plan because it was considerably cheaper and worked perfectly for what we needed it for.

Site Ground is absolutely a hosting service we’re happy to recommend for your law firm.

Pros

  • Still budget friendly
  • Fast
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • More expensive than DreamHost
  • Not as easy to use as Lyrical Host
  • Not managed hosting

Avoid: Bluehost

Bluehost is not the ideal pick for your law firm website hosting. While they offer a budget option (for the first year), their customer service leaves you wanting… A LOT. We started building sites here but needed to move off when the second year’s pricing skyrocketed and their customer service was lacking.

Ultimately, Bluehost’s pricing scheme is comparable to DreamHost and they both offer shared hosting. But unlike Bluehost, their customer service is helpful and knowledgable. We’ll admit that it’s been a while since we used Bluehost, but our experience does not warrant a recommendation.

Benefits of good legal website hosting

Having a website is an important part of today’s business world. Without one, you may be missing out on valuable opportunities to reach new customers and build relationships with existing ones. But good web hosting is essential to ensure that your website is functioning correctly and running smoothly. Good web hosting can offer many benefits for businesses large and small.

Security

In an age where digital threats can range from malicious software to cyber-attacks, the wrong web hosting choice can leave you vulnerable to these risks. It’s essential that businesses do their research not only into the features and services offered by different providers, but also into their security policies and practices.

The best web hosts prioritize customer safety as a top priority and use multiple layers of protection to keep data safe and secure. Some of the measures taken may include encrypted connections, firewalls, prevention against DDoS attacks, malware scans, regular backups and more.

Law firms will want to look for a host that is transparent about their security protocols so they know exactly what steps are being taken to protect their information from external threats.

Reliability

Many web hosting companies promise great service, but when it comes down to it, how reliable are they? If your law firm websites that have frequent outages and slow loading times, can see a decline in both visitors and search engine rankings.

To ensure that your website is reliable, make sure you do thorough research on any potential web hosts. Check customer reviews to get an idea of the quality of service they provide. Find out what kinds of server uptime guarantees they offer and whether or not there are any additional fees beyond the initial cost of hosting.

Support

Good customer service can mean the difference between a positive and negative experience with your provider, your law firms website deserves it. Reliable technical assistance and friendly, knowledgeable staff can help you in times of need and make sure that any issues are promptly addressed.

A robust customer support system might include 24/7 telephone, chat and email options for contact as well as comprehensive tutorials, articles, FAQs, user forums and other resources to allow customers to solve their own problems without needing to contact the company.

Furthermore, many providers now offer live chat services with experienced technicians who can quickly assess any technical issues that may arise.
